What would they buy themselves if they weren't self-conscious about the price? Four years of writing gift guides has produced a set of patterns: personalized gifts work when they reflect genuine knowledge of the recipient; tech gifts should be matched to the recipient's tech comfort level; experience gifts are only good if someone would actually use them.

Pet product coverage came naturally from having two large dogs and a cat with expensive taste in litter boxes. Riley tests pet products in actual use — feeders run through overnight periods without checking them, carriers get packed for actual travel, cat trees get evaluated by cats who have not been briefed on what they're supposed to prefer.

Riley is particular about pet safety. Products with documented failure modes, especially automatic feeders and large structures, are held to higher standards and checked against customer reports for patterns. A malfunctioning feeder that leaves an animal without food for eighteen hours is not a minor inconvenience.
